Changing your plan: billing and proration
When does billing change after an upgrade?
For monthly plans, an upgrade takes effect for your features/limits right away, but you're not charged anything at the time of upgrade. On the next billing date, you're billed the full new-plan price, covering the entire upcoming month.
Is the upgrade charge pro-rated?
No — not for monthly-to-monthly upgrades. There's no prorated charge for the rest of the current cycle, and no partial charge for days already used on the old plan. You pay nothing extra now; the new price simply starts applying from your next billing date.
This is different for annual plans: upgrading an annual plan prorates the remaining months against the cost of the higher-tier annual plan. Downgrading an annual plan is also prorated, but any credit is applied to your next payment after your new term ends.
Switching billing period works differently depending on direction:
Monthly → annual: Yes, prorated, and it happens immediately — the unused portion of your current monthly payment is netted against the new annual plan's cost as a single charge at the moment of upgrade.
Annual → monthly: The remaining balance on your annual plan is converted into credit and applied to cover the cost of your new monthly plan.
Example
You're on the $20/month plan. On day 20 of a 30-day cycle, you upgrade to the $60/month plan. You are not charged $60 (or the $40 difference) right away. An upgrade takes effect for your features/limits right away, but you're only charged the new price of $60 on your next billing date, for the upcoming month.
What about a refund or credit for the unused portion of my old plan?
For monthly-to-monthly upgrades, there's nothing to refund or credit — you aren't charged early, so there's no unused amount to return. If you were charged the full new-plan price immediately and believe that's wrong, contact support at help@n8n.io with your account email and invoice details.
For annual upgrades, any remaining months on your old plan are automatically prorated and applied as a credit toward the new plan's cost at the moment you upgrade. For annual downgrades, the resulting credit is applied to your next payment after your new term ends, rather than refunded directly.
Switching billing periods (monthly↔annual) is also handled automatically as described above.
