How do I prepare for n8n 3.0?

Updated by Sasha Zaitsava

n8n 3.0 is a major release with breaking changes. It focuses on improving reliability, stability, and security, and removes some legacy features. It doesn’t introduce major new product features. See n8n 3.0 breaking changes for the full list and recommended actions.

Which version are you using, and what should you do?

First, check your n8n version: open Settings → Personal. The version number appears at the bottom of the left sidebar.

  • n8n 1.x: Support ends on December 31, 2026. To upgrade to 3.0, first move to v2. n8n Cloud users can change their version here. Self-serve Cloud instances still on v1 at the deadline will be upgraded to v2 automatically.

  • n8n 2.x: You don’t need to upgrade to 3.0 immediately. After 3.0 becomes stable, v2 will receive security and critical fixes for 12 months. New features will be available on 3.x.

  • n8n 3.0 beta: The beta is optional and opt-in. It’s planned for October 27, 2026; stable is currently planned for early December 2026.

Check whether your instance is affected

Open Settings → Migration report. If you don’t see this option, update to n8n 2.39 or later first.

Review both tabs:

  • Workflow issues shows workflows that may need changes. If the report applies an automatic fix, review the resulting workflow version before publishing it.

  • Instance issues shows findings about the instance itself. Even if all your workflows are compatible, instance-level issues may still need attention.

For details about individual changes and recommended actions, see n8n 3.0 breaking changes.

Prepare before you upgrade

  1. Review and resolve or triage the findings in both report tabs.

  2. Take a full backup. There’s no direct rollback from 3.x to 2.x; returning to 2.x requires restoring a backup.

  3. Test the upgrade on a staging or other non-production instance before upgrading production.

For the upgrade steps, follow the guide for your deployment:
